Men and women over 45 are also at higher risk. You are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, if it runs in your family. Type 2 diabetes is much more often observed in African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans or Pacific Americans.MAKE CHANGESUnfortunately, you can do nothing to change your age, ethnicity or family history, but there are several risk factors you can take control of. The risk of developing diabetes also increases, if you are obese, you do not do physical exercise regularly and/or you have an unhealthy diet.If you are aware that you are at risk, making appropriate choices about nutrition and exercise can help you stay healthy. In fact, studies have shown that sticking to a highly nutritious diet and doing exercise can preclude or delay type 2 diabetes.If you are obese, remember that an excessive weight gain is the single most crucial risk factor for type 2 diabetes. According to estimates, 80%- 90% of people with diabetes are overweight. Losing weight and keeping it off can help preclude diabetes. Consume a variety of products, including those that are rich in fiber, such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Also, eat less.Keep in mind that any amount of physical activity is a lot better than none. Ride an exercise bike while viewing the evening news program or your favorite talk-show. Most of all, make certain you take up an activity that appeals to you, so you will do it regularly.So, eating properly and exercising are the keys to attaining and sustaining a healthy weight. |
